Grootbos Nature Reserve is about 1 ½ hours from Cape Town overlooking Walkers Bay. One of the best locations for experiencing the “Marine Big Five- southern right whale, bottle nose dolphin, Cape fur seal, great white shark and the African penguin. Of the 350 southern right whales that visit the southern coast, up to 160 make Walker Bay their home from June to December. The cliffs of De Kelders, offer the best land-based whale viewing in the world. Breaching, tail-slapping and lob-tailing, the whales make the bay a constant hub of activity. Watch spellbound as mothers, calves and energetic bulls come to within 98 feet (30 meters) of the rocky shoreline.
Grootbos Nature Reserve boasts a diversity of fynbos vegetation with over 500 plant species and over 100 bird species as well as a magnificent unspoilt coastline. Apart from activities available at Grootbos, which include nature drives, walks, horse rides and mountain biking, the area itself offers much to do. The 19 mile (30 km) long beaches with a variety of seabirds are perfect for walks.
There are two separate properties, each with nine luxury cottages that have en suite bathroom, fireplaces and mini-bar. The classic Garden Lodge set in a lush indigenous surrounding is the ideal family getaway. The new Forest Lodge with its contemporary and modern style appeals to the cosmopolitan traveler. The lodges features a full bar and lounge and beautiful swimming pool set in the natural environment.
