About Kenya
The charm of the traditional, romantic safari experience draws its roots from Kenya. Thanks to films like Out of Africa, countless nature documentaries showcasing the Maasai Mara and historical figures like Karen Blixen and Ernest Hemingway, Kenya has become one of Africa’s most renowned safari destinations.
Perhaps the country best known for the annual Great Migration. Coming from the Serengeti in Tanzania, more than a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle arrive in the Maasai Mara sometime in July. In between then and October, one of nature’s most spectacular phenomenons occurs. Wildebeest and zebra frantically cross the Mara River while crocodiles, silently submerged, wait for their chance to strike.
Kenya has abundant wildlife, as well as diverse and majestic landscapes. Notable wildlife includes elephant, Maasai and Reticulated giraffe, lion, cheetah, plains and Grevy’s zebra, black rhino, hippo and spotted hyena. The landscapes of Kenya range from the golden savanna of the Maasai Mara, the dried-up lake bed in Amboseli National Park, to the ruggedly beautiful highlands of Laikipia. The country’s safari destinations are easily accessed from Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital city.
There are a myriad of exciting activities available, like birdwatching, hot-air ballooning, horseback riding, camel treks, and guided walks. Many of the private reserves and conservancies cater to a maximum of 12-24 guests in luxury accommodations. In addition, they offer activities not allowed within national parks and reserves. These activities include game drives in open vehicles, night game drives and guided walks. Culturally, guests can explore the various sites in Nairobi, as well as visit manyattas of the Maasai and Samburu tribes.
