Family Safari to Kenya
Dear Mark and staff,
The Appold family enjoyed our recent two-week trip to Kenya very much and learned a lot; the following comments are, however, only Patricia’s.
Arrangements were, as usual, smooth, with minimal frustrations. Martin took good care of us in Nairobi, and the three places we visited our first day were not only a nice balance but an easy introduction to such a drastic change of locale. The luncheon choice was lovely.
Food was attractive in all places and well served. The children tried new dishes but really enjoyed pastas! Accommodations were quite satisfactory.
Each camp presented a special feature: impalas in the front “yard”, a communal table, spectacular view. Thank you for providing the different concentrations of wildlife. The guides/drivers were all experts, but I thought Godfrey at Lewa was most personable… All were competent. Having a Masai connection added interest. Without exception the administrators and their staffs were excellent. I appreciated the participation many showed – engaging in soccer with the children, for example.
The last flight, out of Nairobi to the field where Sammy collected us for our Lake Elmenteita stay, was spectacular but I was sorry we were not prepared for the geological history underneath us. A simple map or drawing even would have helped with recognizing the history of the plateaus, highlands and rocky terrain (fissures) below us. I am reading “For Love of Soysambu” now, which of course is more a social and agricultural history than wildlife – but it is illuminating and what the last camp was more about. Our family liked the transition days there; I was happy with the shorebirds, including flamingos, we saw!
Thank you for the balance, the quality, the experience of Kenya beyond the animals…
Happy New Year. . . .

Family Safari to Tanzania
Mark!
This was the journey of a lifetime and has changed us all.
We fell in love with Africa and in the hands of Emmanuel Mkenda, well, we don’t need to tell you that we learned everything there is to know about everything that touched our experience. He is the legend! He is a wonder of a man and we all enjoyed one another’s company immensely. Thank you for pairing us with him.
We are Very grateful to have been able to experience this trip of a lifetime. We will return!
We did not want to leave.
THANK YOU!

Safari to Tanzania and Island Getaway
Hello and thank you!
We had a wonderful time and all went very smoothly. The expansiveness of the landscape and the ability to experience the grand (and small) animals interacting and living in their natural habitat is life changing and grounding. Thank you for facilitating this amazing experience!
Our guide, Wilfred is phenomenal. Professional, witty, so knowledgeable on so many subjects, enthusiastic and personable. So glad you mentioned in his short bio that he is a soccer fan. We brought him a Chico State University Soccer shirt (Marie’s brother-in-law is a retired coach)…
Acacia Farm Lodge was really great. Well-appointed and very tasty food and coffee and staff was super friendly and helpful. They surprised Marie with a retirement cake along with singing and dancing presentation – very sweet.
Ngorongoro Crater was amazing and we did get to see flamingos there along with many other animals and birds…and…black rhinos (three)! Through binoculars, of course. Marie also had a chicken leg (part of box lunch) stolen out of her hands by a Yellow-billed Kite. It swooped in and grabbed it. All was well and we all had a good laugh!
All the bush flights were fine and the guides did a great job of getting us to them in a timely manner and staying until our flights took off.
Intimate Camp Zebra was terrific and there were very few guests. Great staff and very good food. All drinks and laundry were included (no extra cost)…We understand why the Serengeti is so popular and were glad to have gone outside of high season. We saw the wildebeest migration across the Mara River several times and maybe 12 trucks at the most gathered at sightings. Otherwise, there were just a handful of trucks roaming around. Monah Mooshe was our guide and he was very good. Both Monah and Wilfred were very eco-conscious and picked up any trash discarded by other folks (a few plastic water bottles) and spoke of conservation education efforts they make in the schools. Game drives began at 6:30 and sometimes didn’t get back until 1-2. Late afternoon drives began between 3:30 and 4 and back by 7 at the latest.
Ruaha River Camp was outstanding and cottage/room 8B was the best! Early morning and evening viewing of the wildlife from the deck was mesmerizing (definitely a top highlight for Marie as an early riser). Terrific staff and guides and refillable water bottles were provided (we brought our own, but this was great to see). Another retirement cake along with singing presentation happened…
Rufiji River Camp is located in another wonderful spot…The dining staff was the best! The boat safari (6:30-noon breakfast on the river) was very good and it was a nice change to be on the river– definitely a highlight of the trip…
We are really glad we had the opportunity to experience Ruaha and Nyerere prior the expansion for all the day-trippers.
…The BlueBay Beach Resort was lovely and a nice transition coming from the bush before we headed home… Great service. We did a walking tour of Stonetown arranged through BlueBay and snorkeled with One Ocean at Mnemba. Very good trip and wonderful guide…
We’ll certainly recommend AAC to friends, and who knows, maybe another trip is in the cards for us!
Best regards,
Marie and Anne Demers, Oct 2024
Exclusive Safari to Kenya
Hi Alison,
We want to thank you for arranging such a near perfect trip for us- and at a great price!… We absolutely loved Lewa and Sirikoi and, as I wrote earlier, I think this was certainly one of the top experiences we have had in Africa.
Our first camp was truly one of the best places we ever stayed. We were at Sirikoi camp in the Lewa Conservancy in Northern Kenya. We first visited Lewa Downs in 1993 and had not been back. WOW what a model of conservancy. It was started by Ian Craig as a rhino sanctuary with 12 rhino and now boasts over 250 black and white rhinos. They also have 12% of the very endangered Grevy Zebras (which graze along side the Burchells).
The owner of Sirikoi is Sue Roberts who along with her legendary husband, now deceased, Willie were pioneers of conservation throughout Kenya and were absolutely critical in the creation of the conservancy. Sue regaled us with tales of their life here over the years. She was so open and engaging and introduced us to other part owners…We got to visit the headquarters of the conservancy and also the back of the camp tour where we saw their one acre veg and flower garden glass recycling, charcoal making, solar system and other wonderful self sustains off the grid infrastructure. Sue raised an orphaned infant cheetah, rides out on the conservancy where her giraffe, who is free to leave but stays at night in his stall, joins her on rides…
Mara Nyika was lovely and the accommodations, staff and cuisine were top notch…
We had a fabulous time at Ol Donyo Lodge in the Chuylu Hills as well. Great Plains does a wonderful job with all their appointments and the rooms are hugely spacious. We enjoyed the Starboard one night but never used the pool despite the heat. We were told they are adding AC for next season which would make Bob especially happy. We were thrilled to spend some time with One Ton and got to see some more gerenuk. We saw tons of eland and beautiful oryx and had a couple novel viewings of a goshawk killing a mouse and a flap neck chameleon. We saw tons of birds throughout of course.
We loved the private guiding and all three guides were excellent and fun to spend time with. I thought it was exceptional that the Great Plains guides offer to take photos with the room camera for you and they got some shots we never would have captured.
Feeding the giraffes, watching the baby eles at Sheldrick and revisiting Karen Blixen’s house was great with Duncan. My how those places have changed in 30 years!
Thanks again Alison for putting this great itinerary together for us and for all the details that made it go smoothly…

Tanzania Safari and Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Stuart and I had the best trip ever!
Thank you so much for working with us, getting to know a little about us, and planning this awesome adventure…
We loved Chem Chem. The staff was wonderful, the food was excellent, we saw wildlife passing within feet of our porch! What a way to wake up in the morning. Our guide, Nenga, went out of his way to make sure we had the best game viewing experience. He even took us into a blind near a watering hole to see the elephants up close and personal.
On one of our night game drives Nenga found a leopard out hunting; We saw springhare’s jumping around like kangaroos, and found a litter of baby jackals at the base of a tree.
One of my favorite pictures from Chem Chem was 4 lions just hanging in a tree…We had sundowners every night and each one was so special. We had a chance to squeeze in a massage and hang by the pool for a few hours too. As we watched the giraffes come by. And one night they set up a gorgeous anniversary celebration dinner for us.
We met our next guide, Ephata and headed to the Ngorongoro Crater. Arriving at Crater’s Edge we were thrilled with the lodge and the beautiful view from our room. Peter, the manager on duty, and all the staff were there to greet us and make us feel welcome.
Ephata took us into the crater for the day and we were amazed with everything we saw. One of the highlights included watching 6 lions stalk a warthog for about an hour. One of the lions jumped the gun and the warthog got away. It was just amazing to watch the process of their hunt…It was this day that I recognized Ephata’s love of the wildlife and for his country. I knew then that we had hit the jackpot getting him our guide.
We headed to the Serengeti and it wasn’t but 30 minutes after entering the park that I noticed a line of something in the distance. Ephata pulled over, got out his binoculars and identified a pride of lions on the move. He looked ahead and saw a tree by the roadside. He said they are heading to the shade of that tree. So we went and parked there and waited. Sure enough, those lions came right to that tree and within 3 feet of our vehicle. There were 10 of them!!
This was our introduction to the Serengeti and it was my favorite place. We stayed 2 nights at the Lemala Nanyukie Lodge and then 3 nights at the Lemala Mara Mobile tented camp. They were totally different places and we loved them both.
Highlights included:
- Sighting a total of 99 lions
- Seeing a leopard up in the tree laying across a baby topi he killed
- Watching a leopard and her baby playing in the bushes
- Witnessing the great migration not once but TWICE, and the second day was unbelievable
- Finding a lion and her cubs eating a wildebeest they recently killed
- A baby zebra was born right outside the mobile tented camp area.
- The people, the food, the accommodations, the feeling of safety amongst the wilderness… All spectacular
- Ephata; I credit him with the level of awesomeness of our trip
On to Rwanda –
Patrick was great. Informative and a safe driver. The Amakoro Songa Lodge was luxurious. Felt so special after the tented camp for sure!
Gorilla trekking is something no one will really understand or feel unless they actually do it. We feel so fortunate to have been so up close and personal to the gorillas, and for Mark suggesting we add this adventure to our trip instead of scuba diving somewhere! I thought I would be scared, but the guides and the trackers eliminated any hesitation I had…
I was ambivalent about the city tour and visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.. .until we did it.
The history of what the Rwandans went through is heartbreaking. Their goal of peace education and giving up revenge is a big ask, but one that makes sense for a brighter future. I was amazed by the spirit and hopefulness of the Rwandans…
Honestly, the cost of the trip was more than I had planned to spend. But now that we have been on the trip I can tell you it was worth every penny!
Thank you so much!!

Kenya Flying Safari
We enjoyed every part of our safari in Kenya. Thank you for everything you did to make it very worthwhile.
From the time we landed at Nairobi airport and were met by your local reps there, then ushered through customs and driven to Hemingways Hotel, all went smoothly.
We loved Hemingways and are so glad we decided to spend 2 nights there. Worth every minute. It is a beautiful property. We had a gorgeous room and it was the perfect place to recover from our 2 long flights -Miami to London and London to Nairobi.
Our subsequent transfer to Wilson airport and flight to the first camp – Richard’s River Camp – went equally smoothly…
…After our 3 nights at Richard’s, we must say it became our favorite Camp.
Here are a few reasons:
The staff at Richards is amazing. They are enthusiastic and very attentive. They meet your jeep every time you pull up, they mingle with the guests, and seem very interested in everyone’s lives. They created community dinners where we had a chance to speak with other travelers. They really went all out.
So we commend Sofie, Klint and Sara for their attention to detail and true passion for their jobs.
Perhaps because Richard’s Camp is smaller than Little Governors the service was incredibly personal.
In addition, our guide at Richards, a wonderful Masai named John, was fantastic. He showed us everything we wanted to see, and then some.
On day 1 we approached a pride of 13 lionesses just waking from their naps and starting to go on a hunt – we tracked them for a while – they set up an ambush, positioning themselves strategically as they watched 3 warthogs approach, then the chase was on!
We literally watched one of the lions grab one of the warthogs right in front of our jeep and complete the kill. We’ve been on quite a few safaris and never seen this much action up close!…Another morning we tracked a beautiful leopard – watching it take its kill up a tree and then come down again…
Every morning on our game drive, we had breakfast out in the bush with a table and chairs set up by John and the most incredible food spread before us…bacon and egg sandwiches, waffles with syrup, granola and yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee, juices.
Sundowners were equally special and always in a different location, but the most amazing sundowner occurred as a surprise for just the 2 of us as a celebration of our 58th anniversary …up on a high hill where they had set up chairs, a table with champagne, flowers, and a beautiful card for us – it was an unforgettable anniversary for us.
Anyway 5 stars to Richard’s camp!
Our return to Little Governor’s was a bit of a mixed experience. The approach crossing the river with a man pulling your boat by rope was as beautiful and memorable as we remembered, with hippos lying on the opposite bank and our walk-through the woods into the camp, where we immediately saw an elephant out in the Swamp impacted us as much as it had the first time we ever went.
Little Governor’s tents look just as we remembered them 17 tents all in green around the swamp where hippo and elephants and even giraffes come to feed.
They have remodeled and updated the main dining tent area. It has a bar now and a deck, so it’s been upgraded quite a bit. Also, the tents themselves are more sophisticated than at Richard’s…
Hope you have enjoyed our little recap. I will attach a few pictures …thanks again!

Exclusive Honeymoon Safari to Tanzania
Hi Megan,
I hope you are doing well! I am sorry it has taken this long to get back to you, it’s been a busy few weeks since our return but we wanted to share some pictures/feedback finally!
We truly had such an incredible experience. The highlight of the trip was the sunrise hot air balloon in the Serengeti, we are SO happy we booked that last minute! It was such a surreal experience and so unique to view the landscapes and wildlife from that perspective.
Sean’s favorite National Park was Tarangire and mine was the Serengeti but we are so happy we did all 3 because each park had something new/different to offer. We are also very happy we had dinner with Anita and her husband in their home, they were so welcoming and we loved getting to know about her family and learning more/getting excited for our upcoming safari!
Our favorite accommodations were the Ndovu Tented Camps and then the Siringit Migration Camp. We preferred the tents to the Acacia Lodge, but I can see how the lodge does have some benefits with their amenities. We found the staff at all three to be great but at the tents you could get to know them on a more personal level and all of their personalities really shined. Ephrim was incredible. You could tell he was so knowledgeable about the animals’ behaviors and migration/feeding patterns and because of that, we were able to see SO much. He was also very attentive to our needs which was very sweet! In the Serengeti we basically had a private driver (we only shared the jeep once for a few hours with another couple before they went to the airport) and our guide there was also awesome!…
And thank you again for everything, we can’t wait for our next safari!

Private Great Migration Safari to Tanzania
Miles:
Sorry for a delayed response, but we wanted to follow-up and let you know what an amazing trip our recent safari adventure was to Tanzania. We saw more animals and birds than we expected, and the safari guides were extremely knowledgeable and helpful to ensure that we saw and experienced what we had anticipated from the adventure. We have the hundreds of photos and meticulously completed mammals and birds checklist documenting our daily adventures.
The camps gave us a variety of types of accommodations and certainly provided an “up close and personal” opportunity to live among the wildlife in the bush. The staff at each of the camps went out of their way to be welcoming and accommodate our wants and needs. The balloon ride was one of the highlights of the trip, as the pilot was most helpful in pointing out the wildlife, as well as being very entertaining. The English breakfast out in the wild was a very memorable finishing touch.
The stay at Kahawa Cottages at the beginning of the safari and the return visit for lunch on our way back to the airport was extremely appreciated, as bookends to a fabulous schedule. It was such a pleasure to be welcomed by Anita and Finnias and comforting to know that Anita was responsible for the local arrangements of our stay…
The trip was everything we had hoped for and more. We will certainly recommend Africa Adventure Company to anyone we encounter that might be contemplating a safari to the area.
Sincerely,
John and Marcia Graft, Sep 2024
‘Best of Tanzania’ with Great Guides
Dear Megan and colleagues,
Jambo!!
The following is a very short commentary of the experiences- from beginning to end.
- First we had overcome our suspicions of working with an unknown entity – The Africa Adventure Company. We are very happy to note that you and your colleagues worked very hard to ally our concerns though we never voiced our qualms. You – all – have earned our confidence now.
- Our guide Martin met us at the airport and we took an instant liking to him. Throughout our association he was courteous. A naturalist who knows his stuff. He was and is respectful to the parks we visited. He was respectful to us… He was always neatly dressed and kept the vehicle clean as well. (I make that point since we observed a large number of guides who looked like slobs as well as their vehicles.) He ensured that we stayed hydrated by supplying us with an ample supply of cold Martin will always be mentioned whenever we discuss Tanzania. He truly made our trip memorable. We like and respect him.
- Tarangire Elephant Springs. We would rate this a 5-star. Staff, accommodations and food were all great. The grounds are still being developed but that did not distract from its appeal. In two years time this will be a premier site.
- The Manor at Ngorongoro. Also a 5-star facility. Staff, accommodations and food were all great. It is a unique and elegant facility that is both formal and casual. Very welcoming.
- Siringit Serengeti Camp. 5-stars. Staff, accommodations and food were all great. The atmosphere is rustic elegance. Very different from the lodges. We loved it.
- Aurari Camp. 5-stars. Staff, accommodations and food were all great. Also, rustic elegance. (Do you notice a trend?) We loved it.
- Coordination. Your local ground support is out of this world. No matter where we went or when we arrived – lodges, camps or airport – someone was there to greet and guide us. Virtual and at times actual hand holding.

The Manor at Ngorongoro

Siringit Serengeti Camp
Each of the lodges/ camps provided us with a unique park experience. We got up at 6 AM in the morning and were on our way shortly after 7 AM. Martin made sure that our lunch picnics had an elegant element. Tablecloth was always present. We returned to our base between 3 and 4 PM each day.. Dog tired!!
We expected bumpy roads but the safari was much more “exciting” than we imagined. Martin did a great job driving. He proved himself an excellent guide and driver in the parks as well as on the public thoroughfares. Did I mention that we like him?…
The balloon ride was worth it. Too short from my perspective but there are a lot of factors to consider. We did sight a few animals but nothing spectacular. It was all about the “flight.”
When traveling in foreign countries, sanitation is always a concern. We were happy to note that our lodgings had drinking water as well as safe water to bathe. One experience that stands out is the absolute cleanliness of the park’s public restrooms in Tanzania. The roads may be very, very bumpy and very, very dusty, but the rest rooms were super clean.
It was a terrific trip. Well organized. Friendly and very competent staff wherever we went. Great food. Having the guide and vehicle to ourselves proved to be a very good idea. Tanzania can be proud of their resources. They will have increasing issues in their parks, however. Not the tourists directly but their rogue “guides” who show little respect by not staying on the approved paths/ roads. Or by crowding the animals in order to “please” tourists. Martin showed again and again how a true naturalist and guide behaves. Did I mention that we like Martin?
Thank you…to all of you. Asante sana.
Have a Great Day!
Regards,
Gunter Haubrich, Sep 2024
Best of Tanzania Premier Safari
Hi Kyle and Team:
Here are our thoughts on services, ground operators, our guides and accommodations.
Ground operators were waiting for us at each location, helped with our luggage and had cold water waiting for us always with a smile.
Greeting with Anita the first morning was fantastic! She gave us a review of your itinerary, answered our questions and then went out of her way to help me with my lost luggage, amazing! Then helped Jackie and I meet up with her husband the last day for tanzanite gems and some shopping. She is awesome!!
Our guides where the very best we could hope for. We didn’t know what we didn’t know about how important your guides are on this adventure. When you are spending 8 hours with them each day, they become a member of us. We want to thank Servuli, Issa and Baraca for their outstanding kindness, knowledge and dedication to helping us see everything on our list and so much more! They also made sure at each airport that we got our tickets and luggage handled!
Accommodations were amazing! First was the Wilderness Collection, Craters Edge, this place is spectacular, rooms are amazing, staff is over the top kind and helpful! The food was amazing.
Camp Zebra was just so different that at first, I think we were a little skeptical, but it didn’t take long for that to change. The staff were so fun and easy going, always offering to help! The tents had everything we needed. The food was good. By the end of the first day Camp Zebra grew on us so much, we loved it!!
Then came Little Chem Chem, what a way to finish this amazing adventure!!! Everything about this place is breathtaking! The chef, JJ, superb, exceptional, warm and kind!! Amani was so attentive to us during our, again so kind and warm!
Quinn and Gloria those two always had a big smile on their faces, greeted us whenever we were coming or going, and then. We asked them maybe a bottle of champagne for our last evening game drive. What they did with Amani’s help, they set up the tree house with lights, an open bar, and snacks so we could watch our last sunset together. They left us speechless!!
Our many thanks to all for making this a lifetime of memories!! Cheers,
Jackie and Mike Heneghan and Geoff Pausa, Sep 2024
‘Best of Tanzania and Kenya’ Migration Safari
Hello Elena and everyone,
WOW! What a safari tour!
We just spent 2 incredible weeks in the wilds of Tanzania and Kenya and we will never forget our time there. Every aspect of this trip starting with the planning stage right up to our arrival back home was executed professionally and flawlessly. We were well cared for and unburdened of many of the usual stresses of foreign travel.
Each camp was unique and welcoming. The Kahawa Cottages were a bit of Eden hidden just behind the hubbub of Arusha. The Sanctuary camp on the lip of the Ngorongoro Crater had a friendly elephant that walked right up to our porch. Alex Walker presided over our dinner table at the Serian Lamai. He was a charming host and appears to be a real force of nature. The mobile camp at Nkorombo on the Maasai Mara was idyllic. The location right along the river provided views of hippos, crocs, and giraffes. We got a kick out of the bucket showers and the camp mascot warthog. Finally, the Offbeat Ndoto Camp was exceptional in its luxury. Our “out on safari” breakfast was made to order and served on the banks of the Mara River by a chef wearing a white jacket and toque. The biggest take away that we had at every camp however, was the genuine kindness, friendliness, and helpfulness of everyone we met.

Offbeat Ndoto Camp
We were especially grateful for all who guided us through all the trials of travel, including air flights, border crossings, customs, ground transportation, baggage handling, etc. We felt comfortable knowing that there was someone there at every step of the way, helping two mostly inexperienced travelers get to our destinations safely and on schedule.
All our guides (Jeremiah, Colin, Joseph and Daniel), drivers and spotters were professional, courteous and knowledgeable, although we found it sometimes a fun challenge to understand their African speech patterns and accents. They probably had similar issues with our speech patterns and slang. As bird-watchers, we really enjoyed all the colorful birdlife and were amazed at our guides’ ability to spot and identify them all for us.
Food and drink were plentiful and excellent. We loved all the soups that were served as a first course. We could not eat enough to satisfy the servers and hosts. They kept wanting us to eat more and more. And we tried!!
Special thanks go out to Anita & Finias and to Alex & Shauna for their hospitality and care for our well-being…
Once again, Elena, thank you for helping us live our dream adventure. You and your team made it a beautiful reality.

Private Great Migration Safari to Tanzania
Miles and AAC staff,
Karen and I wanted to express our Thanks to everyone at AAC for the planning and execution of the details for our visit to Tanzania starting and ending with our visit to Kahawa Cottages. Anitia, Finias and the staff at Kahawa couldn’t have been more welcoming. The cottages were beautiful, the food outstanding and what a relaxing experience following the long flight from Chicago and then sending us back to the states.
Almost 10 years ago, we toured South Africa, Kruger National Park, using the services of AAC and had a wonderful time on that trip. We thought we had seen a lot of what Africa had to offer in terms of game viewing on that visit. Wow, were we mistaken. The trip to Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti Plains showed us a totally different and exciting view of an African adventure. In addition to the outstanding game viewing, staying in the tented camps brought the experience that much closer to us. We enjoyed the opportunity to sit on the deck of the tent and see the zebras and wildebeest up close and personal…
Our guides, Isaiah and Eddie (Kaskaz Camp guide) were excellent in their guiding and more importantly developing the relationship with us that made the many hours riding the “bumpy” roads together more enjoyable. And they found John his cheetah and his rhino. Along with the guides, the staff at all of the camps were very helpful and attentive. However, I will say that the staff at Kaskaz was particularly attentive with the head chef introducing the dinner each evening and the welcoming and departing songs sung by the staff.
To sum it up, we thank all the individuals that made our trip exciting and enjoyable.
Best Regards,

Best of Tanzania with Great Guides and Island Getaway to Zanzibar
Hi Kyle,
The safari was wonderful. Everything was perfect. The accommodations were excellent. I am grateful that you notified them of my night vision balance issues. In all locations we were assigned the closest tent to the main dining area. That was a great help for me.
When we discovered that we would have one driver/guide for the entire two weeks, we were mildly concerned. But after meeting Martin those concerns vanished. He was fantastic. He is well spoken and articulate. Martin not only found the animals, he anticipated their moves and positioned us for great photographs. He was a very safe driver and has a good sense of humor. I would love to travel with him again.
