Uganda’s Growing Gorilla Families – Celebrate 2024’s Latest Gorilla Births! 🦍

A GORILLA BABY BOOM IN BWINDI

We’ve got exciting news from Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with several recent mountain gorilla births!

Recent Gorilla Baby Announcements

Nshongi Group: Munini proudly welcomed her fourth baby, growing the family to 14 members. Her previous offspring—Raha, Bayenza, and Kijumwa—continue to flourish under silverback Bweza’s care.

Nshongi Group: Kabagyenyi also gave birth, with both parents and baby thriving under Bweza’s vigilant leadership.

Mucunguzi Group: Migogo’s newborn has increased the group’s size to 15.

Bikingi Group: Mucecuru’s latest addition brings this family to 9, watched over by silverback Kaharata.

Rushegura Group: Kibande’s newborn has expanded their clan to 17 members.

Based on the Buhoma/Ruhija side of Bwindi there are 11 families:

Buhoma ~
 
Mubare Group: 08 members – including one silverback, three adult females, two juveniles and one infant.
 
Habinyanja Group: 12 members – including two silverbacks, two blackbacks, five adult females and one infant.
 
Katwe Group: 07 members – including one silverback, two blackbacks, three adult females and one infant.
 
Binyindo Group: 10 members – including one silverback, four adult females, one juvenile and two infants.
 
Muyambi Group: 06 members – including one silverback, three adult females, one juvenile and one infant.
 
Rushegura Group: 17 members – including two silverbacks, two blackbacks, five adult females and five infants.  
 
 
Ruhija ~
 
Oruzogo Group: 11 members – including two silverbacks, three adult females, one juvenile and three infants. 
 
Bitukura Group: 14 members – including three silverbacks, four blackbacks, five adult females & two infants.  
 
Happy Group: 07 members – including one silverback, three adult females and three infants.
 
Mukiza Group: 20 members – including one silverback, seven adult females, five juvenile and seven infants. 
 
Kyaguriro Group: 09 members – including one silverback, four adult females and three infants. 

 

Based on the Rushaga side (Kisoro region), southern area of Bwindi there are 10 gorilla families:

Nshongi Group: 15 members – including one silverback, one blackback, two juvenile and four infants.
 
Bweza Group: 13 members – including two silverbacks, four adult females, two juveniles and two infants.
 
Tindatine Group: 07 members – including one silverback, four adult females and two infants.
 
Rwigi Group: 10 members – including one silverback, five adult females and three infants.
 
Kahungye Group: 15 members – including one silverback, four blackbacks, one juvenile and four infants.
 
Busingye Group: 17 members – including one silverback, seven adult females and seven infants.
 
Bikyingyi Group: 09 members – including one silverback, four adult females and three juveniles.
 
Mucunguzi Group: 15 members – including one silverback, seven adult females and three infants.
 
Kutu Group: 20 members – including one silverback, one blackback, two juveniles and six infants
 
Mishaya Group: 14 members – including one silverback, five adult females, four juveniles and four infants.

 

Based on the Nkuringo side (Kisoro region), southern area of Bwindi there are 4 gorilla families:

Nkuringo Group: 14 members – including two silverbacks, two blackbacks, six adult females and three infants.
 
Christmas Group: 08 members – including one silverback, two adult females and two infants.
 
Posho Group: 17 members – including one silverback, eight adult females, three juveniles and four infants.
 
Bushaho Group: 09 members – including one silverback, three adult females and three juveniles.
