Victoria Falls
“Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in flight”. That's what David Livingstone wrote in his journal upon seeing Victoria Falls for the first time. One of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, it's twice the height and 50% wider than Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls is truly a spectacular sight. The five separate cascades are Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls and Eastern Cataract. Up to 150 million gallons of water crash down upon the rocky surface floor per minute during the peak floodwaters around mid-April. The resulting spray rises up to 1650 feet in the air. Visibility is best from July through December when there is less water cascading to the pools below.
Though shared by both Zimbabwe and Zambia, the views of the falls are more impressive on the Zimbabwean side. This is because the area surrounding the falls remains uncommercialized. In addition, there are many unobstructed vantage points. Another way to view Victoria Falls is from above: the “Flight of Angels” or the Zambezi Spectacular provides helicopter tours.
Thrill seekers should consider the bungee jump at the Victoria Falls Bridge, the Gorge Swing, or some world-class whitewater rafting! Nearby game-viewing opportunities are at Zambezi National Park. Sable antelope, elephant, zebra, eland, buffalo, giraffe, lion, greater kudu and waterbuck are among the park's inhabitants. Available activities include day game drives, walks, canoeing and kayaking. Sundowner cruises operate upriver from the falls.
The town of Victoria Falls has many luxury accommodation options, as well as restaurants.
